Vintage Basketball Association (VBA) is a semi-fictional league composed of 28 real teams in 1970 (16 from NBA and 12 from ABA), plus 1 expansion team (San Diego Conquistadors) which would join the then ABA in 1972 is added to fill up the league. In the off-season period, a real draft class starting from 1971 would be imported, and the salary cap is 25.5M, where 0.5M would be added after each season.

I've choose the sole expansion team, or the Q's so as to build from rough. Similar to my previous attempt, several house rules are set to enhance the game playing. First, only even or slightly advantaged trades could be made (2-1, 3-2, 4-3 etc., 1st round pick equals 2 and 2nd round pick equals 1). Second, free agent could only be signed while I really need one, i.e. I've less than 12 healthy players. Third, C can play C and PF, PF can play C, PF and SF, SF can play PF,SF and SG, SG can play SF, SG and PG, and PG can play SG and PG, where starters could occupy not more than one space in the depth chart, and backups could occupy not more than two space. Finally, only one offer could be made in each free agent signing round, except mid-level and low-level exceptions offers.

Edited by: Honny118 at: 6/13/03 12:30 am

And here's the expansion draft, which I hope is my first step to success. The rule is fairly simple: each team with 12 or more players would not loss more than one player which is unused in any position in the depth chart in the expansion draft. Under this rule, 52 players from 14 teams are eligible for the draft (bolded players are selected by the Q's):

Floridians:
PF Greg Wittman, 23, 6'8", 210, C+, D, F+, C, C, C
SF Dennis Stewart, 23, 6'6", 220, C, D+, D,-, C, C, C
SG Clarence Brookins, 24, 6'4", 190, C+, D-, D-, C, C-, C
SG Ron Nelson, 24, 6'2", 175, C, C-, D+, C-, D+, C
PG Fran O'Hanlon, 22, 6'1", 175, C, D, C-, C, D, C

Knicks:
SG Mike Riordan, 25, 6'4", 200, C+, C, C-, A-, C-, A
SG Mike Price, 22, 6'3", 200, C, C-, D, C-, D+, C
PG Milt Williams, 25, 6'2", 185, C, D, C-, C+, D-, C

Braves:
PF Nate Bowman, 27, 6'10", 230, C+, D, D, C, B, C
SF Mike Silliman, 26, 6'6", 225, C+, D, D, C, C, C
SF Mike Lynn, 25, 6'5", 215, C, D, D-, C, D+, C
PG Paul Long, 26, 6'2", 180, C, C, C-, C, D+, C

76ers:
PF Al Henry, 21, 6'9", 190, C, D, F+, C, C, C
SF Bud Odgen, 24, 6'6", 215, C, C-, D, C, C-, C
SG Cliff Anderson, 26, 6'5", 200, C+, C-, D+, C, C-, C

Cougars:
PF Gene Kluttz, 25, 6'7", 200, C, D, F+, C, C, C
SF Vann Williford, 22, 6'6", 195, C, D+, D, C, C, C
PG Mack Daughtry, 23, 6'3", 175, C, D, D+, C, D-, C

Bullets:
SG Eddie Miles, 30, 6'4", 195, C+, B, C-, C-, C-, B
SG Gary Zeller, 23, 6'3", 205, C+, D+, D-, C, D+, C

Colonels:
PF Dennis Hamilton, 26, 6'8", 210, C, D, D-, C, C-, C
SF Al Williams, 22, 6'6", 210, C+, D, D, C, C, C
SG Tom Hagan, 23, 6'4", 185, C, C, C, C-, C-, C
SG Howard Wright, 23, 6'3", 185, C, C, C-, C, C-, C

Condors:
PF Walter Banks, 23, 6'10", 205, C+, D-, D-, C, C+, C
SG Sam Watts, 22, 6'3", 185, C, C, D+, C-, C, C
SG Arvesta Kelly, 25, 6'3", 195, C+, D+, D, C, D+, C
SG Hubie White, 30, 6'4", 205, C, C, D, C, C-, C

Royals:
SF Greg Hyder, 22, 6'6", 215, C+, C-, D, C-, C+, C
SF Willie Williams, 24, 6'7", 200, C, D, D, C, C, C
SG Moe Barr, 26, 6'4", 195, C, C, C-, C, D+, C

Bucks:
SF Bob Greacen, 23, 6'7", 210, C, D, C-, C, D+, C
SG Jeff Webb, 22, 6'4", 170, C, C-, D+, C-, D+, C
PG Marv Winkler, 22, 6'1", 170, C, C, C-, C, D, C
PG Bill Zopf, 22, 6'1", 170, C, D+, C, C, D+, C

Chaparrals:
PF Bobby Croft, 23, 6'10", 210, C+, C-, D, C+, B-, C
PF Bob Bedell, 26, 6'8", 205, C+, C, D+, C, B, C
PF Gary Bradds, 28, 6'8", 220, B-, C-, D-, C, B-, C
PF Willie Davis, 25, 6'8", 234, C+, D, D-, C, C, C
SG Charles Beasley, 25, 6'5", 190, C, C, C, C-, D+, C

Warriors:
SG Levi Fontaine, 22, 6'4", 190, C, C-, D+, C, D+, C
SG Ralph Odgen, 22, 6'5", 205, C, C-, D, C, C-, C
PG Adrian Smith, 34, 6'1", 180, C, C, C-, C+, D+, C
PG Al Attles, 34, 6'1", 180, C, D+, C, C, D+, C

Trail Blazers:
PF Bill Stricker, 22, 6'9", 220, C+, D, F+, C-, C-, C
PF Ron Knight, 23, 6'7", 215, C+, D, D+, C, B-, C
PF Walt Gilmore, 23, 6'6", 225, C+, D, D-, C, C+, C
SG Claude English, 24, 6'4", 185, C+, D, D, C, C-, C

SuperSonics:
PF Tom Meschery, 32, 6'6", 215, B-, C-, C-, C+, B-, C
SF Barry Clemons, 27, 6'6", 215, C+, C-, C-, C+, C, C
SG Rod Thorn, 29, 6'4", 195, C+, C, C, B+, C-, C
PG Jake Ford, 24, 6'3", 180, C+, C-, C-, C, D+, C

Edited by: Honny118 at: 6/12/03 12:07 pm

Also, Mike Riordan has excellent potential rating, which I hope could turn into an useful player for the Q's. Except them, I have no plan to retain the current roster. Fortunately, being a new-born team, the Q's has 14.73M caproom, which would be very useful in the free agent market coming up.

Edited by: Honny118 at: 6/13/03 12:33 am

I would be interested in the seed league you used to start this.

I think you used excellent house rules. I plan too copy them myself.

Agreed - awesome house rules. And I'd also be curious in the "seed" league (does that mean, what file Honny used to upload the retro stats to begin with?).

Hopefully with that tough start for the Q's, you didn't get dissuaded, Honny?
